Fun at the Area Staff Conference

Fun at the Area Staff Conference

I had a great week at our staff conference! I was the “minute-by-minute” producer of the conference which means that I sat on the front row and make sure that everything stays on schedule. Here’s a picture of me at the conference. Next to me is my friend Justin Custer who was the timekeeper and stage manager. There was a team of about 20 of us that help to make the meetings go well. There was a sound and light company that we hired as well as camermen, video guys, and 5 computers. The afternoon before the first meeting, I wanted to have a rehearsal to make sure that we were ready. We needed to practice to make sure that the videos came on when they were supposed to, lighting transitions went smoothly, and tons of other details. The rehearsal went terrible. Just about everything went wrong. We missed every transition and video and there were long pauses while we tried to get things to work. We were all pretty discouraged after it and I figured that having the rehearsal was a big mistake.

I prayed in the next few hours before the meeting that God would make up for our short-comings. It was His conference and without Him we couldn’t get it done. That night went off without a hitch and the rest of the week went very smoothly. In fact, I’m not sure we missed a major transiton the whole week. The biggest problem was when it took a couple of seconds to get someone’s mic turned on. As I look back on it, I think the bad rehearsal was the best thing that could of happened because it showed how much work there was to be done and how without God’s intervention we were in trouble. It was a great time to see God at work!!!

Winter’s Finally Here

After waiting until last week to get any snow, it has finally showed up in a big way.  We got 2-3 inches last Friday and then today it started snowing hard!!  We’ll probably get at least another 2-3.  The snow sure makes winter a little more bearable.  It is beautiful.   I’m sure I’ll be ready to see it go by March, but for now I’m enjoying it.

No Amazing Race for Tom & Jerry

I finally looked up the application and rules for the Amazing Race and as I had suspected it included one simple line that will keep us out of the running, “Must be a resident of the US”.  Oh, well.  It was a long shot anyway.

I’m back!

Actually I’ve been back from our Area Staff Conference since Sunday and I’m digging out of the piles that built up while I was gone.  I’m part of the way through the 200 plus emails that I received while I was gone (not including SPAM).

It was a great 10 days at the conference.  We heard from Joe Stowell, Bill Lawrence and many of our staff throughout the area.  I was the minute-by-minute producer (basically in charge of keeping the sessions on schedule) so I didn’t have time for much else.  It was awesome to have people from over 17 nations worshipping and praising the Lord together.  A little picture of heaven.

Hopefully, life will return to normal next week as we are taking this week to recuperate.

Where’d Tom Go?

Those of you that are regular readers of my blog (my wife, kids, and my
mom), realize that I haven’t posted in a while. I’ve found that when
life gets busy, the blog is one of the first things to go. Ironically,
I probably have more things to blog about when life gets busy, but
that’s how it goes.

I’ve been preparing for our ministry’s Area Staff Conference that starts
this weekend. As you can imagine, preparing a conference for 1000
people is keeping us busy. I leave tomorrow for the conference which is
going to be at a hotel on the shores of Lake Balaton (the largest lake
in Central europe).

This might mean that there is even less of a chance of a blog entry in
the next couple of weeks.

Amazing Race

Valerie & I are totally addicted to the Amazing Race. We can’t get it
over here in Budapest so my dad records it and sends the episodes over.
He just got a DVD recorder for Christmas so now we are watching them on
DVD!!! We just watched the first 6 episodes of the current race and we
were so excited to see that they came to visit Budapest!!! It was fun
to see them show up at the airport and drive Soviet-era car called a
Trabant to a castle about 60 miles from Budapest (There are 2 or 3 of
these cars parked on our street). After watching the last episode that
we have, they were still in Budapest so we can’t wait to receive the
next episode which should have more footage of our beautiful city!!!

I’m about ready to apply for the show along with my good friend, Jerry.
For a long time, I didn’t think that I could get noticed by the show’s
producers, but Jerry pointed out that we would be “Tom & Jerry,
missionaries” I think that would be an interesting group and with all
our experience travelling together here in Eastern Europe, we should
have a shot at winning the thing. What do you think???

Media: STOP COMPLAINING!!!

As many of you, I’ve been following the aftermath of the tsunami in SE asia.  It is a terrible tragedy that is overwhelming in its scope.  I’ve followed the media reports as they tell of heroic rescues and stories of grief and sorrow.

What I’m frustrating about is their criticism of the relief efforts.  It seems like everytime someone talks about the relief efforts, they gripe and complain about how slow they are.   Who said they are slow?  What would have been fast enough?  Should they have been their 5 minutes later?  How about 5 hours?   When faced with huge areas that have no accessible roads, no power, no communications, no runways, how were they supposed to get their any sooner?  Why can’t they assume that government and non-government organziations are doing everything they can in responding to a disaster so big that no one could have been ready for it?   Yes, it is sad to see the challenges that survivors are facing against disease, starvation, etc . . . but it doesn’t mean that someone was negligent.

Next time, we’ll ask CNN to organize the relief efforts because clearly they could have done better.

Test Failed!!

I wrote this morning that the Aggies had a big test today in Dallas against the Volunteers and they clearly failed the test.  It seems that so many bowl games go this way.  One team gets momentum early and the other team goes down the drain.  I think it has something to do with all the activities and busyness leading up to the game.  There is hardly time to get ready to play football in the schedule.

I’m a little bummed, but I have to remember that we had a great year.  We played 8 bowl teams and came out with a respectable record.  We were in a little over our heads in the game and a win would have been a big upset.  Almost everyone is coming back next year so we’ll give it another shot.

I did get to listen on the radio.  I was about to give up when I looked up the stations that carry the Aggie broadcasts and I just started going to all of their websites until I found one that was streaming it.  Thank you San Antonio affiliate!!  I missed half of the first quarter, but based on the result, I didn’t miss much.

Gig ‘Em Ags.  We’ll do it next year!!
